Discover, identify and keep track of the marine wildlife of Península Valdés and the North Patagonian coast. Marine Fauna – Península Valdés & North Patagonian Coast is a practical bilingual field guide featuring 90 species of marine mammals and seabirds representative of one of the richest and most diverse coastal environments in the South Atlantic.

Designed to accompany you on trips, field outings, coastal walks, boat excursions and wildlife-watching activities, it combines detailed illustrations, scientific information and a compact, durable format, making it ideal to carry in your backpack.

What area does the guide cover?

The guide focuses on Península Valdés and the central coast of Chubut, one of the most important regions for marine wildlife in the South Atlantic.

To facilitate species observation, the area is organized into two main coastal zones:

  • Northern Zone (N): extends from Puerto Lobos to Rawson. It is dominated by Península Valdés and the calm waters of the San José, Nuevo and San Matías Gulfs. This area is an important sanctuary for the Southern right whale and is home to large mainland colonies of Southern elephant seals and haul-out sites of South American sea lions.
  • Southern Zone (S): extends from Rawson southward, through Punta Tombo and Cabo Raso to Camarones. Unlike the northern zone, it features an open-ocean coastline and numerous islands and islets. It is an important migration route for humpback whales, hosts breeding colonies of Southern giant petrels, and provides island refuges for South American fur seals.

This division makes the guide useful throughout a broad stretch of the Chubut coast, from the border with Río Negro to the Camarones area, both for wildlife observation from land and during boat excursions.

Why choose this guide?

  • 90 illustrated species: includes marine mammals and seabirds such as whales, dolphins, orcas, sea lions, elephant seals, penguins, albatrosses, petrels, cormorants, gulls, terns and numerous coastal birds.

  • Seasonal presence: identifies resident, summer and winter visitors, as well as other seasonal patterns throughout the year.
  • Identification information: includes common names, English names, scientific names and measurements, indicating differences between males and females when applicable.
