CONSERVACIÓN EN LA PATAGONIA CHILENA - Evaluación del conocimiento, oportunidades y desafíos

$44.21 USD

The Chilean Patagonia, located on the western margin of South America, between the Gulf of Reloncaví and the Diego Ramirez Islands, is one of the last places on the planet with extensive pristine environments. With a coastline stretching over 100,000 km, it has one of the largest marine-terrestrial interface areas in the world. Due to its long history of state and private conservation initiatives, over 50% of its land area and 41% of its maritime territory are officially protected and serve as global reservoirs of natural heritage. Here, objectives such as biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and climate change mitigation can be put to the test. However, the Chilean Patagonia remains a scientifically understudied region and is increasingly facing strong anthropogenic pressures, such as salmon farming, peat exploitation, and the opening of new routes to remote and pristine sites.

"Conservation in the Chilean Patagonia: Assessment of Knowledge, Opportunities, and Challenges," a unique book in its genre, presents the collaborative work of 67 researchers, as well as a group of high-level experts and reviewers specializing in various fields of knowledge: biology, ecology, socio-ecology, conservation, fisheries, aquaculture, anthropology, economics, geography, tourism, cryosphere, oceanography, climate change, and global changes. Across 18 chapters, the book compiles, analyzes, and synthesizes scientific and socio-environmental information related to Patagonian conservation. It also provides insights into the conservation challenges in different environments, along with priority recommendations. The need to increase interdisciplinary research and establish an integrated, operational, and funded network of protected marine-terrestrial areas in the Chilean Patagonia is emphasized, taking into account the coastal marine spaces of indigenous peoples.
